Bio & Expertise

An International Relations scholar, Shively's work has evaluated national security and grand strategy in the Carter, G.W. Bush, Obama, and Trump administrations. This research develops innovative analytical frameworks drawn from a foreign policy analysis approach, and Shively is extending these studies in a comparative direction with research on, for example, Brazil's grand strategy. His other recent work focuses on technology and policy change. Topics include cybersecurity strategies for the United States and NATO as well as an article on early Cold War US technical assistance in Iran. With over 15 years in undergraduate and graduate classrooms, Shively is also passionate about about integrating scholarship with discussion and current events. Over that time, Shively has developed a wide range of courses, including intro to internationals relations and intro to American politics, religion and international politics, technology and national security, American foreign policy, causes of war, and international law.
