Dieting and correct eating habits are vital to diabetic control for the non-insulin dependent diabetic. A regimen was developed to get participants off to a fast start. This program represents a case study of 1 individual who succeeded in losing and keeping weight off and who managed to build his confidence so he could keep his goal. A week's hospitalization (with an 800 calorie diet) is followed by a gradual exercise program and a 1,000 calorie diet. Counseling (scheduled sessions) keep the participant on track. Food intakes are adjusted for hunger as weight and losses increase. Hints are provided to help the dieter stick with the program (no TV snacks). Plateaus or weight gains required extra encouragement, therefore, counseling takes on an even greater significance. (kbc)
