Bio & Expertise

Kathy Andresen DNP, RN, CNE, Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice, teaches courses in nursing leadership, evidence-based practice, law and ethics, community/public health, and health education in the community. Dr. Andresen has a passion for public health and has practiced nursing care in a variety of settings within the community including a substance abuse treatment center, WIC program, public health department, school health, home health, and a federally qualified health care clinic. Her primary clinical expertise is community-based nursing care within school settings, where she has served as a consultant in regional, state, and national roles working to inform policy based upon best practices for school nurses. Dr. Andresen has a passion for nursing education and has been teaching in academic settings for over decade. Dr. Andresen was previously employed as an Associate Professor and Chairperson in the Department of Nursing at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa prior to relocating to Pensacola. Her clinical practice research interests have focused on disease management in K-12 schools where her work was published in the journal of School Nursing and School Nursing: A Comprehensive Test 2nd edition. Her doctoral work was focused on leading change in nursing education and was published in the International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship. She has also worked on a number of interprofessional projects with peers, as her interests in educational excellence have evolved. Dr. Andresen considers herself a life-long learner and has earned numerous degrees in nursing. She earned her diploma in practical nursing and later an Associate Degree in Nursing from Scott Community College, Bettendorf, Iowa. She then earned her Bachelor's in Health Arts from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL. Dr. Andresen earned a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa and eventually a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Rush University in Chicago, IL. Her doctoral focus was both organizational leadership and nursing education. Dr. Andresen earned a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) from the National League of Nursing and has completed a certification program in online teaching program through Governors' State University and is currently pursuing her Master in Pubic Health. She is thrilled to be joining a committed team of colleagues at UWF and plans to pursue opportunities to continue public health advocacy work in the Pensacola region.
