Abstract

Each day, more than 56,000 children seek medical attention in the United States (US) because of acute pain incurred from injuries.( Drendel, 2017). Distractions are alternative pharmacologic interventions used during patient care of pediatric clients. Virtual reality, novels, games, and enjoyable activities help pediatric clients feel less pain and anxiety. Music has the ability to induce relaxation by reducing autonomic nervous system activity. Distraction can alleviate the intensity of preoperative anxiety. Finding less invasive methods for children to cope in a hospital setting is important for a quicker recovery without medications.
