Abstract

This presentation is a review of evidence, comparing the effectiveness of Nasogastric (NG) tube feeding to oral feeding and oral stimulation therapy. The parameters of the articles reviewed included premature infants are thirty-seven weeks or less gestation with no preexisting condition. Factors used for determining effectiveness were time to healthy feeding, weight variation, cost, effort, and recurrence of hospitalization. The five articles provide peer-reviewed evidence that suggest earlier transitions to oral feeding and stimulation did affect the outlook of the patient and resulted in greater survivability and health over traditional practices.
