Abstract
Introduction: The University of West Florida Community Garden (UWFCG) brings educational and social opportunities while addressing food insecurity. The identified problem was the lack of emphasis on health benefits of herbs within the garden. Research findings show herbs have alternative medicine properties and can support cardiovascular, digestive, and dermatologic health.
Aims: The purpose of this project is to increase awareness of natural herbal remedies and their healing/medicinal benefits. The aims are to provide education and evidence-based dietary usage for the following herbs: (1) Lavender; (2) Mint; (3) Rosemary; (4) Lemongrass; and (5) Dandelion.
Methods: The group researched the herbs identified by the UWFCG. The group planted herbal seeds in the UWFCG raised beds. Educational infographics were developed for each of the chosen herbs including an herbal tea recipe titled The Healing Cup.
Results: A laminated QR code was created and placed at the UWFCG so the community can easily access the The Healing Cup. A copy of The Healing Cup will be placed in the little library located in the garden for additional access to the educational materials. The community agency partner expressed their satisfaction with the deliverable, appreciating the effort and attention to detail.
Conclusion: The multifunctional benefits of herbs (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial) offer a holistic approach to health, addressing a range of conditions from microbial infections to aging and cardiovascular issues. The group hopes that this project will educate and inspire individuals to incorporate herbs into their daily routines for improved health and well-being.
