Introduction: Bayview Senior Center provides seniors in Escambia County with event programs and support groups to promote meaningful social connections. The problem identified was social isolation. Research findings show older adults are at increased risk for social isolation which can lead to mental and physical health issues.
Aims: The purpose of this project is to educate older adults at Bayview about social isolation and increase the use of digital media to increase social interaction. After the educational session participants will be able to: (1) Discuss the impact of social isolation. (2) Identify activities that increase social interactions and build relationships; (3) Demonstrate setting up a Facebook account.
Methods: The group created a survey to assess the seniors technological needs. Based on the results the group decided to provide a Facebook educational event. Three deliverables were created to support this event: Technology and Social Isolation pamphlet; presentation titled Stay Connected: A Facebook How-To; and a Facebook Account Creation How To Guide.
Results: The survey of 23 seniors revealed: 43.5% felt socially isolated at times and 47.6% expressed interest in learning how connect through social media. Three members attended the presentation at Bayview Senior Center and expressed interest in the effects of social isolation, but declined to create a Facebook account.
Conclusion: Based on our survey results and evidence in the literature, many seniors are experiencing or are at risk of social isolation. The hope is to improve the connectivity of the seniors at Bayview.
