Abstract
Introduction: Gulf Coast Kid's House (GCKH) is an organization in Escambia County that provides support services to children who have experienced abuse. The identified problem was the lack of child abuse awareness and education. Research findings show fear of reporting decreases with increased knowledge and education.
Aims: The purpose of this project was to increase awareness about child abuse and long-term effects of trauma. The aim was to collect sanitary supplies for GCKH through a Needs Drive and have 50 individuals complete the Know Child Abuse training.
Methods: The group provided educational materials and collected donations during the Take Back the Night event. The group created two flyers to promote the event and one educational handout titled Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting. The pamphlet described the TEN-4 mnemonic for recognizing abuse, reporting requirements, QR link to Know Child Abuse training, and donation instructions.
Results: The group educated over 25 students during Take Back the Night and collected donations: 28 toothpastes, 21 deodorants, 6 soaps, 1 razor pack, 2 loofahs, 70 toothbrushes, 2 pants, 4 shoes, 7 bags, 1 assortment of makeup samples, 3 tampon, 10 pad packages, and Nativity of Our Lord donated $200. Conclusion: Child abuse prevention must continually be a topic of discussion and education. There is a significant gap in learned-knowledge and applied-knowledge of the subject. The group hopes that, one day, there will be increased awareness and prevention efforts to ensure the safety of all children.
