Abstract
Introduction: Capstone Adaptive Learning & Therapy Centers, Inc. Burgess Group Home is for non-ambulatory adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The group identified there are limited scheduled activities on weekends. Research findings show that 40% of adults with IDD experience disproportionately high obesity rates and most do not meet physical activity guidelines. Aims: The purpose of this project was to develop physical activities to promote better health and increased engagement for non-ambulatory group home adults with IDD. The aim was to provide four Saturday activity plans, including practical resources and clear guidance to facilitate adaptive movement and promote physical engagement. Methods: The deliverables included a month-long adaptive activity plan schedule including: (1) Sensory sand box activity; (2) Adapted fishing game; (3) Birdhouse and bird watching project; and (4) Memory cork board; and (5) Printable activity schedule and staff supportive instruction booklet. Health literacy and the specific needs for the non-ambulatory residents were considered with the development of all deliverables that included an Individualized movement activities plan. Results: The group implemented the four activities with the group home residents during the semester with each group member leading one of the activities. Final photo cork board activity, Activity Booklet, and calendar were presented to the group home staff during the final experience. Residents showed increased engagement and enjoyment during implementation of activities. Conclusion: Adults with IDD are at an increased risk for obesity due to limited mobility. This project increased resident engagement and encouraged healthier lifestyles through creative adaptive activities.
