Abstract
Introduction: Capstone Adaptive Learning & Therapy Centers, Inc., Burgess Group Home is the residence for seven adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Increased capacity for inclusive sensory stimulation activities was identified as a need. Sensory activities promote positive social, emotional, and cognitive outcomes in individuals with disabilities and are a low-risk, practical approach.
Aims: The purpose of this project was to develop an inclusive sensory stimulation activity to engage the group home residents. The aim was to create and implement a sustainable activity on March 14, 2026, with detailed instructions for future use by staff.
Methods: The group researched spring sensory activities and chose the most inclusive options based on the residents' specific needs. The group gathered supplies such as Easter eggs, sensory-filler toys, snacks, and baskets. Canva was utilized to create a Spring Activities booklet designed to be inclusive and flexible to meet each resident’s individual needs.
Results: The spring sensory event was successfully implemented on schedule. Activities included: Easter egg hunt, the spring photobooth, and snack time. All seven residents actively participated in at least one spring activity and high levels of interaction were observed. Activities were adapted to resident ability. Staff feedback was positive and they were provided the handbook on additional activities for future use.
Conclusion: The focus of this community impact project was to address the needs of all residents in the home. Providing adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities more activity choices can increase participation and support greater independence and quality of life.
