Abstract

When first-time mothers give birth, it is a very emotional, eventful, and vulnerable time. Education is important for mothers while they are pregnant, to better prepare and inform them on decisions based on their baby’s health and their own, especially if the mom has an existing mental health concern and may be on antidepressants. However, trends based on a study done in 2019 noticed that mothers with depression and on SSRIs, have lower breast-feeding rates at six to eight weeks (Jordan et al., 2019). While there are risks to medications taken during pregnancy, there are very few medications that require complete interruption of breastfeeding. During post-partum, any medication the mother is on should require a risk assessment regardless of the type of medication (Monfort et al., 2023).The decision to breastfeed or formula feed is uniquely a mother’s decision.
