Postpartum Depression in Postpartum Women Who Are Homeless

Abstract
Introduction: The Majella House is a program for pregnant women who are homeless. The identified problem was postpartum depression (PPD). Women who are homeless and pregnant are at a higher risk of experiencing PPD due to instability of the social determinants of health.
Aims: The purpose of this project is to provide education about PPD. After the educational intervention participants will be able to: (1) Define three signs and symptoms of postpartum depression; (2) Identify two activities that are effective to prevent postpartum depression.
Methods: The group developed an presentation and infographic about PPD that included: prevention; risk factors, diagnosis, self-care, and community resources. The training includes administering the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) which is an evidence based tool to assess PPD. Results: The group educated the staff and two mothers who live at the Majella House on March 26, 2025. Feedback was positive from both the mothers and staff, regarding the PPD screening tools and interventions. All deliverables were provided to the Majella House staff for future use with new residents at the Majella House.
Conclusion: Programs that both provide routine screenings and include wellness, physical, and educational interventions have shown to reduce the occurrence of PPD in women. This project helps address mental health in the homeless population, specifically interventions to reduce PPD in pregnant women who are homeless.
