Planting Hope: Using Affirmations to Support Healing in Abused Children

Abstract
Introduction: Gulf Coast Kid’s House (GCKH) is a children’s advocacy center that serves victims of child abuse in Escambia county. The group collaborated with the GCKH staff and determined a need to increase positive support for the children. Research has shown that interventions such as positive feedback and repetition of affirming statements increase self-esteem and improve emotional regulations. Aims: The purpose of this project was to engage victims of child abuse in the use of positive affirmations to provide trauma informed care and help improve mental health. The aim was to develop a positive affirmations program for the children at GCKH by July 15, 2025. Methods: The deliverables included: (1) Positive Affirmations tree with blank leaves that children can write on; (2) An infographic; (3) “Snack Stickers”; and (4) A leaf catch box to collect overflow from the tree. UWF’s Creation Station at the Education Research Library to get supplies for the tree. Canva was for the infographic and sticker design. Results: The Positive Affirmations Tree was posted in the Snack Area at Gulf Coast Kid’s House. Quantifiable outcomes included: Example leaves, blank leaves for the tree and leaf templates, overflow box, and sticker template with GCKH logo for placement on all snacks distributed at the site. Conclusion: The project aimed to promote healing through a trauma-informed approach by developing a positive affirmations program. The Positive Affirmations Tree and uplifting stickers offer meaningful ways to encourage positive self-worth, hope, and emotional resilience for children at GCKH.
