Abstract
Introduction: The University of West Florida Student Health Services (UWF SHS) supports college students through healthcare services. The identified issue is limited knowledge about the sexually transmitted infection (STI) Mycoplasma genitalium. Many college students lack awareness about STI transmission, symptoms, potential complications, and available treatment options.
Aims: The purpose of this project is to increase the UWF students' awareness about Mycoplasma genitalium. The goal of this education is to: (1) Describe Mycoplasma genitalium symptoms and treatment; (2) Discuss the prevention of STIs; and (3) Identify the availability of STI services at UWF SHS.
Methods: The group met with their assigned community partner and determined the need for education on Mycoplasma genitalium. An infographic describing Mycoplasma genitalium and treatment options was created.. The infographic includes a QR code linked to the UWF SHS website for making appointments.
Results: The group collaborated with the UWF Peer Health Educator team to post 8 infographics in high-traffic areas in conjunction with condom distribution on campus and 3 at UWF SHS. The infographics were also posted on social media by UWF Usha Kundu, MD College of Health, and UWF Peer Educators. The effectiveness of this project will be determined by the engagement numbers from social media.
Conclusion: Mycoplasma genitalium is a significant issue among college students and can lead to infertility, pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID), prostatitis, and epididymitis. This project has the potential to create a more informed student population and improve public health outcomes on campus.
