Abstract
Introduction: Capstone Adaptive Learning & Therapy Centers, Inc. Transition Employment Center (Capstone TEC) helps young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) reach their optimal level of functioning. The group identified the issue of limited access to age-appropriate reading materials. Enhanced literacy has been linked to better health outcomes and socialization for adults with IDD. Aims: The purpose of this project was to provide the students at Capstone TEC increased access to age appropriate literature. The aims were to create a book club and incentive program to increase the Capstone TEC students’ reading accessibility by July 15, 2025. Methods: The group collaborated with Capstone TEC to assess the reading levels of the students. A flyer was developed for promoting a book donation drive specifically for books within the Pre-K to Middle School reading levels. Book donations were collected in the community. Results: The group collected donations of 161 books in the specified reading levels. A repurposed bookshelf and bullet board were decorated in the Capstone TEC lobby. The location was determined so that visitors and family can donate or grab a book easily. Decorations included signs showing the benefits of reading. The feedback given at implementation was overwhelmingly positive. Conclusion: Evidence shows that one of the most effective ways to achieve improved health outcomes is to engage with literature. This project addressed the meaningful community need of reaching an optimal functioning level through enhanced access to books, unlocking the many benefits that reading brings.
