Prolonged hospital stays upend patient lives as well as cost the hospital money as they are financially liable for hospital acquired (HA) infections. Our team investigated research behind incentive spirometry and chest physiotherapy to determine if a singular intervention could reduce postoperative pneumonia. The following are definitions from our research: Incentive Spirometer (IS): a device that helps a patient breathe deeply and clear their lungs after surgery or illness; Chest Physiotherapy (CPT): an airway technique to drain the lungs, can include use of vibration, deep breathing, and percussing the patient s chest.
