Abstract

Postpartum insomnia is very common after childbirth and may be caused by hormonal changes, infant care, and stress. During this new phase of life, mothers may be getting insufficient sleep which can cause fatigue, impaired functioning, and postpartum depression. Pharmacologically, mothers can assist their sleep schedule with melatonin, however, this may impact their sleep quality and raises concerns regarding side effects. Insomnia may also be treated with holistic interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), sleep hygiene with a routine, and relaxation techniques. While comparing these different approaches, it is vital to determine the safest and most effective method for improving sleep and regulating the melatonin in postpartum women.
