Abstract
Introduction: The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County (FDOH) works to protect and promote the health of individuals through community-based efforts. School-age children are at risk for undiagnosed or untreated vision impairments due to low participation in school vision screenings. Lack of correct screening and failed diagnosis in children can lead to issues later in adult life. Aims: The purpose of this project was to increase the awareness of vision screenings for children and educate about the importance of early vision care. Learning objectives included: (1) Discuss the need for early eye exams in children; (2) Recognize the symptoms of impaired vision in children; and (3) Discuss how to obtain a vision screening. Methods: Education deliverables included: (1) Infographic for parents; (2) Short educational video; (3) PowerPoint to educate parents including a QR Code for digital access; and (4) Eye health activity for the children. Results: The group presented the draft deliverables of the project to the administrative staff. Feedback was incorporated and the final deliverables were presented to the nursing administration. Suggestions for potential implementation after official approval included: Showing the video in clinic waiting areas; texting video to parents; and school nurse utilization of the game. Conclusion: There is a need to increase awareness about early detection of vision problems in school-aged children. The group developed multiple educational deliverables that will hopefully increase awareness and the number of parents who provide consent for their children to participate in the free vision screenings offered at school.
