Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC s) are associated with increased mortality and morbidity (Elefterion et al., 2023). Pulmonary complications include: atelectasis, pneumonia, bronchospasm and acute respiratory failure (ARF)(Elefterion et al., 2023). Incentive spirometry is a deep breathing exercise device that requires the patient to take slow, deep breaths and aids in the complete expansion of the lungs. Incentive spirometry allows for the measuring of baseline lung function, the tracking of improvements or decline in function, and ability to set goals. Exercise and expansion of the lungs is vital to improving pulmonary function in postoperative patients.
