Improving Access To Prenatal Care: A Better Future for All

Abstract
Introduction: The Florida Department of Health serves all populations in Escambia County, Florida. The problem identified was the need for education about the importance of prenatal care for women of child bearing age. Adequate teaching on proper prenatal care is associated with early entry to care and improved newborn health outcomes.
Aims: The purpose of this project was to expand the knowledge about the importance of early prenatal care for the childbearing population. The learning outcomes were: (1) discuss the importance of taking prenatal vitamins, (2) explain the importance of attending doctor appointments during pregnancy, and (3) describe how prenatal care leads to better health outcomes.
Methods: The group developed an educational pamphlet titled “Planning On Becoming Pregnant.” Adobe Indesign and a QR code generator were utilized to develop the pamphlet. The pamphlet provided information to a woman who is planning on becoming pregnant, including important information about prenatal care, health department's services, and a QR code linking to the Women’s Health webpage.
Result(s): The group presented the pamphlet to Dr. Philips and the health department staff. Feedback from the staff who attended the meeting was used to improve the pamphlet before deliverables were provided to the agency for approval from the state office and future official distribution.
Conclusions: Lack of prenatal care and prenatal education is a significant issue and is directly correlated with poor infant morbidity and mortality. The group’s goal is to help others in their journey to a healthy pregnancy.
