Abstract
Many hospitals worldwide have adopted 12-hour shifts for staff. This type of scheduling can have many effects for both nurses and patients. Some positive effects include schedule flexibility, continuity of care, and reduced fatigue. Problems arise when there are severe negative effects on patient care. Nurses working 12-hour shifts had more incidents in comparison to shorter shift times (Webster et al., 2019).
