Abstract

A needless blood draw device connects to an existing peripheral (IV) catheter to collect blood samples without having to stick a patient. Current practice for venipuncture and blood draws uses an existing short peripheral catheter (SPC) or a straight venipuncture which have a high rate of discomfort for the patient and increased rate of hemolysis. SPC use increases the risk of non-viable samples, increases cost due to errors in specimen draws, and increased patient discomfort related to establishing a new venipuncture.
