Abstract
Community Agency/Partner: Mr. William Brown - Our Lady of Angels St. Joseph’s Medical Clinic
Introduction: Our Lady of Angels St. Joseph’s Medical Clinic serves the uninsured and low income population in Escambia County. The main concern is the reduced number of patients after the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of knowledge about the free services they provide. Lack of access for the uninsured is associated with increased use of the emergency room for primary care. Free community clinics help address the healthcare needs of uninsured individuals.
Aims: The purpose of this project was to increase uninsured/low-income population use of services provided at St. Joseph’s Medical Clinic. The aim was to enhance awareness of the clinic by strategically distributing fliers in various locations to reach people who are low-income and/or unhoused.
Methods: The group met with the community partner and discussed the needs and services provided in the clinic. Word of mouth is the main mode of exposure for the clinic. The group created a flyer, using Canva, outlining the clinic services, contact information, and hours in both English and Spanish. Plain language was used in the flyer to address health literacy concerns.
Results: The group placed flyers in six different locations within the community.
Organizations that participated in the project implementation requested additional flyers to distribute to their clients.
Conclusion(s): Often, uninsured adults receive lower quality care and suffer from poor outcomes compared to those with insurance. The group’s goal was to increase community awareness of the clinic and the number of uninsured/low-income population in Escambia County receiving primary care.
