Abstract
Introduction: The Florida Health Department in Escambia County (FDH) is an organization that works to promote and improve the health of populations through numerous community efforts. The identified problem was an increasing incidence rate of congenital syphilis. The number of reported congenital syphilis cases in the U.S. increased 261% during 2013–2018.
Purpose/Goals: The purpose of this project was to educate child-bearing aged people about the prevention and treatment of syphilis as well as the adverse effects of congenital syphilis. The learning objectives were: (1) Discuss transmission and symptoms of syphilis, (2) Explain the importance of screening and treatment (3) Discuss the impact of congenital syphilis, and (4) Identify screening and treatment resources.
Methods: The group created four videos informing the community about dangers of congenital syphilis, targeting the child-bearing aged population. The video topics were: Understanding Syphilis: Symptoms and Treatment, Congenital Syphilis: Impacts on Mother and Infant, A Mothers Perspective, and Soon-To-Be Mother’s Perspective.
Results: The group presented two approved deliverables to the FDH administrative team. The Soon-To-Be Mother’s Perspective was well received by the Healthy Start staff with plans to implement. All deliverables were shared with the FDH for future potential use after approval from the state office.
Conclusion: Syphilis can be detrimental to a pregnancy, but with the right education, it can be easily treated. Although the results of the project are still in progress, the goal of beginning the process to increase awareness about congenital syphilis was achieved.
