Abstract
Introduction: Bayview Senior Center works to improve the quality of life of the senior population in Escambia County through social activities. The group identified a need for education regarding online fraud. Many older adults seek sources of socialization, health advice, and support systems online, which places them at risk for becoming a target for online fraud. Aims: The purpose of this project was to provide education regarding identification of online fraudulent scams and how to reduce vulnerability in the senior population. Learning objectives: (1) Define methods used to commit online fraud; (2) Interpret whether an online interaction is legitimate or fraudulent; and (3) Describe interventions that protect personal information when online. Methods: A survey was conducted with the seniors to determine topics of interest. The group created a flyer, educational slideshow, and “cheat sheet” handout using MSWord and Canva. The slideshow included examples of the types of scams that are most prominent that are common, how to spot these scams, and how to report them. Results: A survey results revealed 30% (06/20) interested in scam prevention. Results were shared with the Bayview staff and scam prevention was determined to be the topic based on agency need. Feedback was positive from the 13 participants who attended. Conclusion: Senior citizens are vulnerable to becoming victims of online scams. This presentation provided participants with research and advice in which they can knowledgeably identify common threats and scams online and apply interventions to prevent financial loss and a decline in mental health.
