Abstract

Introduction: Capstone Adaptive Learning Center (CALC) is a community agency for people with disabilities that provides educational and interactive opportunities. The identified need was to increase the enrichment opportunities for the individuals at the center while considering that agency resources are limited. Research findings show people with disabilities who garden have an improved quality of life, physically, socially, and mentally. Aims: The purpose of this project is to provide the students at CALC interactive experience and increase their knowledge through a center garden. The learning objectives are: (1) Discuss the health benefits from gardening; (2) Demonstrate knowledge of the life cycle of plants; and (3) Demonstrate how to provide upkeep for a garden. Methods: The group mapped the garden area and inventoried equipment, accounting for accessibility and functionality. An infographic titled Gardening 101 was developed that included health benefits of gardening and how to care for plants. Results: There were 30 CLAC student participants who attended the educational event. The group presented Gardening 101 and facilitated an activity where participants planted seeds in plastic cups. The cups were placed into prepared raised garden planters so participants could water, care, and transplant the plants when they mature. Three established plants were planted in the raised beds to demonstrate transplanting mature plants. The feedback from the CLAC staff and student participants was positive. Conclusion: Gardening can improve health for people with disabilities. This project broadened the skills, knowledge, and sense of responsibility for the CALC students.
