Abstract
Introduction: The Alfred-Washburn Center is a resource for unhoused individuals in Escambia County, providing hot meals, showers, mail, and medical services. The identified problem was undernourishment due to affordability and barriers to consistent food resources. Study findings show a strong correlation between poverty and food insecurity.
Aims: The purpose of this project was to increase the community support to provide affordable, nutritious, and hot meals to unhoused individuals at the Alfred-Washburn Center. The aim was to collaborate with local food banks and community organizations to increase meal availability by 20%, ensuring the consistent supply of at least two hot meals per day by November 2024.
Methods: The team identified volunteer organizations to provide hot meals for the center. Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets; and PosterMyWall were used to create project deliverables. The group developed an online spreadsheet, allowing Alfred Washburn the ability to organize volunteer meal planning. Two flyers were developed for 2024 and 2025 to allow volunteer organizations to sign up for days to provide meals for the center.
Results: The group filled 19 meal slots for 2024, achieving a 76% fulfillment rate. The project has the potential to impact 150 and 200 individuals daily with a hot meal. Feedback from the community partner was positive.
Conclusion: Food insecurity is a growing problem for millions of American families. Health issues caused by malnutrition can be improved with adequate nutritional intake. This project addressed the issues of food insecurity and nutritional deficits faced by the unhoused population.
