Abstract
Medication errors can cause psychological scarring to the nurse s drive to uphold the value of nonmaleficence. Fear of corporal punishment following a medication error can create an environment of non-reporting which can lead to further harm to potential patients. Without proper support following a medication error, the fear of causing another can hinder a nurse in performing their duty. Medication errors are a preventable cause of harm to patients resulting in approximately 44,000 98,000 hospital deaths per annum in the United States (Mahat et al. 2).
