Abstract
Introduction: The Majella House serves at-risk-pregnant women and their children during the pre and postnatal period. The identified issue was strengthening the bond between mothers and their children. Maternal-infant bonding directly correlates with quality of care and maternal-infant attachment.
Aims: The purpose of this project was to provide mothers at the Majella House with ways to improve maternal-infant bonding. The goals of the training include: (1) discuss ways to improve maternal-infant bonding, (2) explain how bonding benefits the mother-infant relationship, and (3) apply practical tools and emotional support methods to promote bonding.
Methods: The group developed an instructional guide in English and Spanish titled “Mother & Baby Tool Kit,” utilizing evidence-based activities to stimulate bonding between mother and child. The tool kit included two pre-post questionnaires to assess the maternal bonding level of both pregnant women and those who have children. A companion journal was created so the mother could track bonding activities.
Results: The group presented the deliverables to the Majella House Nurse Coordinators with positive feedback. All feedback from the Nurse Coordinators was incorporated into the final deliverables that were provided to the agency. The Majella House plans to implement the training for the mothers during the spring semester.
Conclusion: Promotion of mother baby bonding is essential to improve maternal and infant health outcomes. While the final evaluation of training is not complete, the group’s work will make a difference for the mothers at the Majella House in the future and assist them in navigating motherhood.
