Creative Voices: Expressing Emotions Through Structured Art

Abstract
Introduction: Capstone Adaptive Learning & Therapy Centers, Inc. Pilgrim Group Home (CALT) provides residential and support services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The identified issue was the resident's difficulty with verbal communication. Individuals with IDD, especially those who are non-verbal, benefit from art because it provides a safe, nonverbal way to communicate feelings.
Aims: The purpose of this project was to spread awareness about CALT and promote self expression for adults with IDD. The aim is to develop and implement a rock art activity with the residents by March 14, 2026, and provide detailed instructions for future use.
Methods: The group developed a simple structure guide for a rock-painting activity to promote self expression. Deliverables included: (1) Infographic with activity instructions, and (2) Rock painting kits.
Results: The group conducted two structured rock art activities. Residents were encouraged to paint at least one rock that represented an emotion or positive message. Assistance was provided to ensure inclusion and participation, resulting in 17 painted rocks. Each rock was labeled with the Capstone Adaptive Learning website to promote awareness of the agency. The residents demonstrated engagement as evidenced by remaining in the activity area, using art materials, and interacting with the group.
Conclusion: This project is grounded in the belief that creative expression promotes emotional well-being and social inclusion for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. By integrating structured art activities with community engagement, the initiative has the potential to enhance resident self-expression while increasing public awareness of the organization.
