Sports cardiology is an emerging discipline within the field of cardiovascular disease and involves the cardiac care of active individuals and athletes. Baptist Hospital has recently started a sports cardiology clinic for specialized care for these patients. The outcomes of master athletes, particularly in our community, is not well characterized. Therefore, we seek to begin a study comparing body composition parameters in two groups of master’s athletes: one taking Lipid lowering medication and the other groups of people with ongoing cardiovascular risk factors not taking lipid lowering medications. We will focus on the following research question: Does lipid-lowering medication have an effect on body composition parameters: percent body fat, free fat mass, percent muscle mass, body volume, and body density?
