Abstract
Introduction: Capstone Adaptive Learning & Therapy Centers, Inc., (CALT) Transition Employment Center (TEC) is an adult day center for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Physical activity and limited fitness opportunities were identified as the problem. Studies show a strong correlation between quality of life, balance, muscle strength, and flexibility in people with mild to moderate IDD.
Aims: The purpose of this project was to educate the students at CALTTEC about the benefits of exercise and develop activities to promote physical activity. The learning objectives were: (1) List three ways exercise improves physical health; (2) Describe how exercise improves mental health and quality of life; and (3) Demonstrate three forms of physical activity.
Methods: The group assessed the potential problems the students of CALTTEC may face with exercise and adapted activities to maximize participation. Canva was used to create two deliverable posters that addressed exercise accessibility issues titled: Benefits of Exercise; and Ways to Exercise. Health literacy was considered through the use of plain language.
Results: The first step of implementation was painting bottles for “bowling pins” which occurred one week before the activity. The group educated 33 students and guided the exercise stations for 1.5 hours. Students were able to verbalize benefits and types of exercise. Staff feedback was positive.
Conclusion: Studies show that a majority of people with IDD spend their time sedentary. This project provided sustainable activities that will encourage physical activity, motivate movement, and promote fun for the students at CALTTEC.
