Abstract
Introduction: The University of West Florida Student Health Clinic (UWFSH) provides primary healthcare to the students at the university. The identified problem was the lack of healthy eating habits in the student population. Evidence suggests stress, economic changes, and lack of nutritional education can cause college students to deviate from healthy eating which increases risk for lifelong disorders.
Aims: The purpose of this project was to educate UWF students about the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030. The learning objectives were: (1) Describe impact of processed foods on health; (2) Apply the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030 to dietary choices; and (3) Identify three healthy and cost-effective alternatives to processed foods.
Methods: Canva was used to develop the deliverables. The deliverables included: (1) Infographic including a summary of the new food pyramid and resources; and (2) Business card with QR link to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030. A table was reserved for implementation at the UWF Commons because it is a popular eating area.
Results: The group distributed 50 business cards and 60 infographics at the tabling event. Each person was educated about the guidelines and healthy food alternatives. Feedback from the students who attended the event was positive. The group also displayed 14 infographics in high-volume areas around campus.
Conclusion: Students often skip meals, have high fast-food consumption, and poor intake of fruits and vegetables; however, many are unaware of their unhealthy habits when surveyed. This project provided tools to help UWF college students make healthier food choices.
