Abstract

hospital bed assignments nursing workload bed protocol patient outcomes Nursing Nursing Education Public Health
Structured bed assignment protocols use patient acuity and staffing information to guide patient placement, helping distribute nurse workloads more evenly than routine bed assignment procedures. A systematic scoping review by Griffiths et al. (2020) concluded that nursing workload measurement tools and acuity-based staffing methods can support safer staffing decisions, improve workload distribution, and contribute to better patient outcomes. Balanced workloads can reduce nurse stress, burnout, and the risk of errors while improving the quality and safety of patient care. Implementing structured bed assignment protocols may lead to fewer adverse events, improved patient satisfaction, and more efficient healthcare delivery in acute care settings.
