Abstract
Introduction: Capstone Transition Employment Center (TEC) is a community center where individuals who have aged out of high school can continue socializing with others with various types of disabilities. TEC identified the need for a structured routine of social activities. Study findings show that structured activities increased participants' connection to the community and other disabled individuals.
Goals: The purpose of this project was to provide a weekly schedule of activities to increase socialization skills, enhance group engagement, and promote individual empowerment. The aim was to develop a four-week calendar of activities for Capstone TEC that includes mandatory Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) training.
Methods: The group toured the facility and observed the participants at the day center and resources at the site that could be used for activities. Using Microsoft Word, a four-week calendar was created to provide structure for participant activities and mandatory APD training. A second document was created to provide easy instructions with links to videos and websites for all activities.
Results: The group implemented one of the activities, modified Zumba, to a class of 25 students and 4 educators. Seventy-two percent of the students and all educators participated in the physical activity. All participants expressed satisfaction at the conclusion of the class.
Conclusion: Connectivity within the community is essential for people with developmental disabilities. The calendar provided the structure and consistency to assist Capstone TEC staff enhance group engagement and promote individual empowerment.
