Abstract

Chaplains serve as one of the oldest continuous roles inside American corrections. Originally meant to function as a religious and moral figurehead inside penitentiaries and other correctional institutions, the role of chaplain has gone through substantial changes over the past approximate 200 years. Though chaplains now largely function in an administrative capacity, chaplains still serve a crucial role to inmates and correctional institutions alike to meet Constitutional and legislative requirements of various religious freedoms guaranteed to inmates.
