An analysis of the resolutions, reports, & other official declarations of the 3,000-member strong Latin American Studies Assoc (LASA) suggests that Latin Americanists generally have shown a poor understanding of the nature of the two regimes closely allied to those that once made up the Soviet bloc: Castro's Cuba & Sandinista Nicaragua. LASA missed, misread, or ignored the internal structures of repression & the supporting roles of these regimes during the Cold war. By overlooking, if not denying outright, that the USSR was using Cuba & Nicaragua for its own purposes in a global struggle with the US, LASA was led into assuming an ill-conceived & irresponsible stance of intransigent opposition to US policies in Latin America.
