Abstract

Bronchiolitis is a common cause of readmission to the hospital for children under 2 years of age, with rates of 3.7% to 8.0% being readmitted within 30 days. It is estimated that among the annual readmissions for bronchiolitis 80% are potentially preventable. There are only a few studies that address predictors for readmission. Some of the factors related to readmission in the literature include respiratory syncytial virus/rhinovirus coinfection, age under 2 months, male sex, lower gestational age, chronic lung disease, living with school-age siblings, living <20 miles from hospital, low income, and being in the progressing stage of illness. None of these, however, are preventable factors. The purpose of this study is to compare the influence of demographic, clinical, and environmental factors and interventions during initial hospitalization on rehospitalization within 30 days of discharge.
