Abstract
K-12 Education Curriculum Development English Education
NCTE Affiliate Recent years have seen change in K-12 education accelerate at a breakneck pace. Demands placed on teachers have never been greater as educators are expected to raise academic achievement to a world-class level. This includes ensuring every student will perform proficiently on high-stakes tests. Since the “Race to the Top” initiative, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) represent “considerable change” from what states once held as standards, as the assessments for these standards now require higher-order cognitive demands (Porter at el, 2011, p. 114). With this shift comes valid questions from educators about the most effective way to connect curriculum and instruction to ensure positive student outcomes on newly developed state assessments.
