Abstract
The Mississippian Stage is the last and most complex stage of prehistoric Indian culture in the Southeast. This short overview is designed to provide professionals in the Americas with expertise outside the Southeast, especially Mexico, Central America, and South America with a synopsis of the current concepts and a few basic references for the late prehistoric Mississippian Stage. This article is only a summary of the basics of this long and complex stage in southeastern prehistory. Space constraints preclude presentation of descriptions about specific regional cultures and local phases. The approach of this article is to identify.
