OPTIMAL NUTRITION is an essential part of every athlete's training program. The ath-0letic trainer or therapist is often the first person an athlete turns to when seeking
nutritional advice and recommendations. It is important to develop communication and counseling skills and understand factors affecting food choices when working with athletes.
Communication and Counseling Skills
Athletic trainers and therapists are often placed in the role of facilitators of behavior change. Developing communication and counseling skills provides them with the ability to empower athletes to overcome barriers to optimal nutritional intake. Table 1 outlines basic listening skills that enhance communication and counseling.
Factors Affecting Athletes' Food Choices
Many athletes are overwhelmed by juggling the demands of their sport, school, work, and social interactions with family and friends. Time constraints can influence food intake even for the most nutrition-savvy athlete. Understanding factors that affect athletes' food choices can provide the athletic trainer or therapist with the necessary information to target nutrition-education efforts.
Conclusion
The athletic trainer or therapist plays a valuable role in providing scientifically sound nutrition information to athletes and encouraging positive changes in eating behaviors that support peak sports performance. Some athletes, however, require evaluation and supportive services of sports nutritionists who are registered dietitians with experience in working with active people. Indications for referral include
-Chronic fatigue and/or overtraining
-Underweight athletes and athletes that want to lose weight
-Athletes in sports with weight classifications
-Disordered eating and amenorrhea
-Athletes with limited nutrition knowledge and food-preparation skills
-Evaluation of nutrition supplements
