There has been much written over the past year or so about the application of wireless networks and laptop computers in higher education. Advertising from vendors advocating ubiquitous computing has appeared in higher education literature such as The Chronicle of Higher Education. Some academic libraries have started to loan laptop computers to students, while others have installed wireless networking capability. This column reviews the issues concerning the introduction and management of the interdependent laptop computers and wireless networking services provided by the Mildred F. Sawyer Library at Suffolk University in Boston. Suffolk University does not require its students to own laptops; that is not consistent with its long-standing mission. Additionally, this column is not concerned with measuring the value of computers in learning and teaching—that is an assessment activity for another column. The availability of laptops and the wireless network at the Sawyer Library is a convenience and service for students.
