This study uses institutional records of hospitals and the United States Marine Hospital Service to study maritime laborers on the Great Lakes during the 1870s. Hospital registers include demographic and workplace information, including national, age, years of service, vessel type, accidents, and medical conditions. This case study focuses on St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Hospital records remain an untapped source for studying domestic maritime labor in North America.
