Abstract

When POWERBAR® first hit the market in the mid-1980s, endurance athletes had an option for a convenient energy source during training and competition. Today, the energybar industry reports over $1 billion per year in sales, with marketing strategies targeting consumers from teens on the run to professional body builders. Athletes can choose from protein bars, low-fat bars, low-carb bars, meal-replacement bars, and nutrition-for-women bars. And energy bars are everywhere—grocery stores, health-food stores, fitness stores, convenience stores, discount warehouses, and even vending machines. So, which energy bars should athletes choose?
