A trucking firm, at the most fundamental level, must be able to deploy its equipment at the right time, at the right place, and in the right condition in order to satisfy its customers' needs. The realization of this goal requires the appropriate equipment and the right personnel. Driver turnover has been, and continues to be, a serious problem for many truckload irregular route motor carriers. Many companies are experiencing turnover rates well over 100%. Such turnover rates create problems for operations, additional costs for the carriers, and service problems for the shippers and receivers. A study provides information about the self-reported levels of turnover among irregular route carriers and relates them to human resource policies. It also explores the relationship between turnover levels and the character of the trucking firm.
