Abstract
During the last fifteen years, there have been significant advances in the procection of cultural resources. Federal and state laws concern primarily public lands, and affect private
property only when licenses, permits or government aid is involved. Many archaeologists have been involved in the management of archaeological resources in compliance projects
involving governmental regulations. (Historic structures are also addressed by federal and state laws, but they are not tne focus of this paper, ed.),
