ChemInform Abstract: A Copper-Catalyzed Tandem Synthesis of Indolo- and Pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines

Abstract
A facile and direct synthesis of the title compounds is accomplished with excellent regioselectivity: indoles or pyrroles react with ortho-haloarylalkynes in the presence of an inexpensive CuI/hydroxymethyl benzotriazole system. The chemistry appears to involve the preferential nucleophilic addition of the indole or pyrrole onto the haloarylalkyne over N-arylation of the halide.
