•Scapular winging is caused by injury, damage, or inflammation to the long thoracic nerve.•Scapular winging can cause shoulder pain, limited abduction, and loss of strength.•The most common muscle affected by thoracic nerve injury is the serratus anterior muscle.•The patient presented with a decreased ability to do daily living activities with medial scapular winging.
