Abstract

Reducing the impacts and costs of products has led researchers and designers to develop life cycle design (LCD) guidelines. In this article, the literature for LCD guidelines is summarized for six specific life cycle characteristics. The main contributions of this article are Tables I through VII, which provide references for environmental design guidelines for six stages of the life cycle. Tables I through VI contain over 140 references to 57 specific life cycle design guidelines. Table VII illustrates the diversity of sources for LCD guidelines. This comprehensive listing is important for researchers developing and analyzing methods to measure and evaluate LCD trade-offs.
