Abstract

The Butcherpen Mound Complex (8SR29), located on the northern shoreline of the Naval Live Oaks Reservation in Santa Rosa County, FL, is a prehistoric multi-mound site with multiple episodes of occupation between the Middle Woodland period and the Mississippian period. This thesis examines the spatial distributions of the artifact assemblage recovered from a shovel test survey performed by University of West Florida archaeology students during the summer of 2021. Utilizing theoretical concepts from landscape archaeology alongside density distribution spatial analysis, this thesis maps ceramic categories to track changes in site occupation through multiple prehistoric periods. The results of these maps suggest that the Butcherpen Mound Complex was physically and socially integral to the development of the prehistoric landscape of the Pensacola Bay area.
